| Boylston bra from Orange Lingerie |
I seems like bra making has taken all the space in my sewing world. I have to "force" my self to look at and sew other projects, or else, this is all I dream about. If I suffer of insomnia, no problem! I simply have to think about the lace, mesh, elastics, and lycra fabric and hop my brain leads me to bra wonderland. It puts me back to sleep and I dream of sewing beautiful lingerie all night long. But I don't only dream about, I sew a bit as well. After finishing my last Malborough bra, I have sewn my first Watson bra. But this bra is not the subject of the present post.
Why the Boylston bra
After seeing Norma Loehr's samples of her most recent pattern, the Boylston bra, I knew that it would be for me. Balconnette and half cup are my two favourite style of bras. Most of the RTW bras I buy are in those two styles.
Before cutting expensive silk and laces, I wanted to make sure that the fit was fine for me. I assumed the 34 B would be perfect since this is the size I cut for the Malborough. I applied the same correction in the back, taking 1 cm off both sides of the back band. Bing ! The fit was right on. Well it was right on after, replacing the front strap. I had misplaced it and the bra was too big.

As I said earlier, for this first Boylston bra, I did not want to cut expensive fabric. I then used left over fabric from a sleeveless blouse project I finished last summer. Well finished is not the right word. I have not done the buttonholes yet.

The back band is sewn with a double layer of power mesh in black. The double layer allows me to have a great finish inside as well as more support. I used 12mm elastic strapes in the back since that size seemed to correspond better to the size of the front part (made of fabric and narrow band elastic).

The brief
![]() |
| Montgomery brief from Orange Lingerie |
To complete the set, I have sewn an all mesh brief using the Montgomery pattern from Orange Lingerie as well. The front panel is made of a single layer and the back (with the center seam you see in transparency) is made of a double layer. This very well drafted pattern fits like a glove and it is invisible under your pants. No inelegant elastic cutting your cheek as you walk.
The following pictures allow you to better appreciate the pattern.

From the original sewing method, I decided to change how the waist elastic is sewn. Norma makes us sew the front part of the waist elastic on the front panel. Then we sew the back waist elastic to the back panel. The front and the back are united at the end by the side seam clearly visible in the following picture.
The thick seam at the waist is very uncomfortable for me.
For the last version in black, assembled the front and back at the sides before installing the waist elastic.

| Montgomery brief - wrong side |

Pattern - Fabric - Notions
Patterns: Boylston bra from Orange Lingerie -Montgomery for the mesh panties also from Orange Lingerie
Fabric: Cotton and Lycra woven fabric from Madeleine Soie et laine (no longer open) - Mesh from Club Tissus in Laval Quebec Canada - the bra lining fabric (not shown) is form Bra Makers Supply in Hamilton Ontario Canada (on line). I used their regular bra lining fabric available in white or black.
Notions: All elastics, the closure and the bow were part of a Bra Makers Supply kit. I had enough elastic for 1 bra and 1 pair of panties. But my brief is a XS and I had to put two types of elastics to fisnish the waist line. Order more then one kit for a more uniform look.

Soyez indulgent.
So here it is !
For this project I used a kit from Merckwaerdigh. The "1970ish" fabric is a light weight stretchy polyester and Lycra knit, the lace included in this kit is also a stretch lace. The mix of fuchsia, magenta, orange, green and white is fun. All elastics provided in the kit are orange and fuchsia. Funny how much I dare color wise for my underwear. I don't think I would were such daring mix for my city clothing.
I used the Malborough bra pattern from Orange Lingerie. This pattern calls for a stable fabric like Duoplex or Simplex. I then had to stabilized the fabric with a nylon tricot... it worked very nicely except for one tiny detail (rooky mistake here), I forgot to fuse a large piece of fabric and cut the bra pieces AFTER !! I did the inverse and it was a bad choice. I will not forget next time I want to fuse fabric. I had little problems with shifting pieces...

The following picture shows the inside of the bra. You see clearly the pink Nylon tricot fused to the Polyester knit. I also underlined the lace since it is very thin, very fluid and very unstable. The picture also shows that the fuchsia thread on the elastic... Since I don't like the look of fuchsia thread on the orange elastic, I matched the thread's color for the panties and the look is much nicer. On the inside I added a bias of stable sheer cup lining over seem allowance. This why my top stitching is a little wonky.

The fabric suggested for the back band is power mesh or power net. I could have use the polyester knit without fusing it but I preferred to use the lace. It gives the back a pretty look.

For the panties, I used the super easy and wonderful Jalie 2568 - C pattern. Jeanne, is a champion in designing easy to sew, comfortable and beautiful garments. Do I ever love that woman's mind. She is a genius. If you like Brazilian panties, you NEED this pattern. It takes 30 minutes or less to get a pair of panties.
The panties pattern does not require you to install an elastic at the waist if your lace is 15cm wide. Mine was 20 cm wide so I cut the top of the lace on a straight line and installed the elastic.

Pattern - Fabric - Notions
Patterns: Malborough bra from Orange Lingerie - Jalie 2568 for the lace panties
Fabric: Polyester and Lycra knit and lace are form Merckweardigh on Etsy - I bought a kit for one bra and one pair of panties - Their kits are generous enough to make 2 bras and 2 panties. The kit includes the Nylon tricot to stabilize the knit.
Notions: All elastics were part of the Merckweardigh kit. The kit had enough elastic for 1 bra and 1 pair of panties.
The fuchsia bra closure is from Bra Makers Supply. The one included in the kit was white. I did not like that.
I love !!! Bra closures from BMS
Picture tip
I wanted to show the transparency of the lace and give a little brightness to my pictures since they were taken inside on a very cloudy day. Here is the little installation I improvised. Simple, simple, simple, one white Plexiglas piece, two Ikea light with fluorocompact bulbs and two chairs.
Tada !

For those of you who do not know, I spend lots of time cycling the beautiful roads in Quebec. During one summer I can cycle up to 3000 km. On top of keeping me in an excellent shape, this activity also contributes in relaxing me from work. But the negative effect of this activity is of course that it keeps me away from my sewing machine. I guess that I cannot have it all.
Up to now, I never took the time to sew my own cycling clothes. I waited for Jeanne and Emilie from Jalie to design a great pattern that we can use as cycling top or cycling dress. This year they launched the Anne-Marie Tanks and Dress . So far I test-drive one dress and two tops. Lets start by the fitted tank top.

| Jalie Tank Top 3463 |
Snug & Speed
When you sew Jalie patterns, you should follow and trust their size chart. By doing so, the fit of your garments will always be right and faithful to the pattern picture. Their patterns are designed to give enough ease so that your garments are comfortable... if you use the right fabric of course.
When it comes to road cycling, it is another game. If you go for long rides and you want to keep a good speed, you need clothes that are snug or very fitted. Loose garments will slow you down since they act as a parachute. Your clothes will create resistance to your movement instead of being aerodynamic. For this top, I cut one size smaller than I would usually do for a life style garment. I had test the Anne-Marie dress in my regular size and it was not close enough to my body. Plus, when you bend down on you bike, you want your top to hold your bust in place. For that as well, you need a fitted tank top and built-in bra of the same size.
![]() |
| Jalie Tank Top 3463 - one size smaller than my regular one |
No bags, but lots of little things to carry
Often I will go for rides that are up to 80 or even 100 km in one day. The extra tubes, the compress gaz cylinders, the tools and my car key are in a tiny bag hanging below my saddle. The rest, my phone, my apple, my banana, my sandwich, my money, my id cards, etc. all go in the back pocket of my garment. I need a well designed back pocket. Tennis players or joggers will also love to have a back pocket for balls or a phone. In a way, ;-) we all need a back pocket... even for a walk with your beloved one.

One spot on my back but two pockets
The Anne-Marie (Jalie 3463) Fitted Tank Top will have a different width of pocket according to the size you will cut. The original pocket is simple and efficient. If you cut a size U to FF, you might want to sew a vertical seam so that the pocket offers two compartments. If you cut any sizes between N and T and you need lots of carrying space, you might want to double the pocket as I did. The tutorial for the double pocket will come soon on my blog. Meanwhile, here is a close up of it.
You might have noticed that the center piece of my tank is slightly transparent. I used firm power net to give excellent support and to offer maximum wicking. The heat and sweat will be pushed outside of my garment.
The built-in bra is also made with power net.
The first one of a long series
After a few road tests, I can confirm that this pattern is perfect for cycling and running. It is fun and easy to sew. The look is up to my standards. Jeanne's sewing techniques are as usual easy, fun and efficient.
So far, I made one fitted one and one with the flair pelplum.

Fabric and notions for the polka dot top
Pattern: Jalie 3464
Fabric: 50 cm of red and black polka dot polyester and Lycra from Suzie Spandez in Montreal - 50 cm of power net form Club Tissus in Laval
Notions: 80 cm of underwear elastic for the built-in bra. I use 1 inch fluffy elastic.
Pattern corrections
I added 1cm all around the armcye so that the upper back piece would be wider and that the top would go higher in the back and under my arms.
I also go one size down at the waist to follow my natural body lines

The first garment to be sewn with my new machine is finished and it was worn for the first time last Friday by my gorgeous friend Florence. As I mentioned in my previous post, I used the Vogue pattern # 8358 as a base. This pattern is designed for knits, but I used it with a woven fabric that has 5% of stretch. I gave 1 cm of ease at the bust, waist and hips. The rest of the work was done by the Lycra. The dress needed to stay in place.
The muslin was modified on her so that the neck line, the back and side line would fall exactly where Florence wanted them. She is a professional fashion stylist, she knew what she wanted. I also modified the skirt so that it flairs the way she was imagining it. Meaning a little less than the pattern was intended. I then pressed the muslin so that all line would be pure and perfect and that I would not loose any mark I made with pins. The muslin was then used to draw the paper pattern. I barely had to rectify the lines with French rulers. I added 2 cm at all seam allowances to be certain that I would have enough fabric to correct little flaws or misfits.
She was very pleased with her dress !!

Why on earth did I wait 25 years before I buy my self a decent sewing machine ??? I wonder how I was able to sew all my garments with a machine for kids!
My first project is for a friend who asks for a knock off of this dress worn by Rihanna... but a little less sexy.
I based the design on Vogue 8358 which is for knits. I transformed the pattern to be able to use a 5% stretch synthetic crepe from Couture Elle.

I have been working on a new look for my blog for the past few weeks. I still have some bugs to fix and I appologies if certain functions are not available yet. It should be fully functional soon.
Il me reste toutefois quelques bugs à régler. Le site devrait être totalement fonctionnel bientôt. Je suis désolée des inconvénients.
